Events

We have a stream of events coming together in close proximity to one another, the first of which is the Pam Noah Concert on Friday April 9.

The beautiful part is that it is all FREE due to the efforts of the BDDC committee, contributions by Local Real Estate Broker Phil Nagley, Continental Manor and The Laurels of Blanchester and a sizable contribution by Don Littman, himself,of WOBO. The show starts at 7:30 at the Putman School and you don’t need reservations and it’s free.

On Saturday evening April 10, as a result of a previous cancellation, we will be back in the Municipal cafeteria with entertainment by Mac McClary and the Over The Hill Gang.Any one who likes banjo and bass, or pickin’ and strummin’ will love this group. We are not looking for a big crowd, because we are only trying to introduce this group to the community and we think they are going to go over big time. Anyway the concert is free and if you happen to be hungry around 5;30 or so, stop by the municipal cafeteria and we’ll serve up some corn bread and bean soup for a donation of $5.00. If you just want to come for the music. Fine, It’s Free. We’ll enjoy your company. We desperately need a couple of hands to help with this one. Just call Elizabeth at 783-5993.

If you plan to attend the George Rise Roast at the High School Auditeria at 6:30 on April 26 you need to send in your reservations before the cut off date of April 21. Reservations are $20 for adults and $12 for children twelve and under. Send your check or money order to BDDC Post Office Box 204 Blanchester 45197, postmarked by April 21. We are also accepting donations of door prizes for this one. Please call me at 937-289-2461 if you can help. Enclosed is an article tendered to all surrounding newspapers for your edification. George really deserves this recognition coming in concert with his retirement. We have a lot of high-powered speakers to add to your enjoyment

George Rise in a Nutshell

by Elmer Williams

On April 26. the Good Lord willing, a large group of very appreciative citizens of Blanchester, Goshen and surrounding areas will gather together in the Blanchester High School Auditeria to commemorate the lifetime achievements of an Icon in the history of the Blanchester and Goshen School Systems. This small treatise, by the way, is in no way intended to supplant what someday should be the subject of a full-blown book.

What I will say here and what will be said on April 26 are only thimbles of the whole story. Long-time friends and acquaintances of George Rise, will, on that date, tease George about some of his missteps as he pursued his career, but the underlying theme will be one of praise, honor and appreciation for a lifetime of achievement in helping a lot of our kids find their path to success, not only on the playing field but in their individual lives as well.

Sometimes it takes a while before a steady stream of “yes we can” finds its way into the psyche of a young persons’ life under all sorts of circumstances. Sometimes extricating oneself from a muddy pile of humanity can produce the urge to get up and do it again, only better. Sometimes it is gasping for that extra breath of air when you know there is none there, or giving that little extra push when your energy is already sapped. For some it may be reaching down inside oneself to draw that tiny bit of extra strength when there is no more from which to draw. It is that extra effort that produces champions, not only on the playing field but in the real world as well. Sometimes the extra effort that produces a win is so tiny it can neither be measured nor identified. As Olympic decathlon winner, Rev. Bob Richards loved to say, “In the sports world many times the difference between success and failure is in the blink of an eye.”

There is no way to measure the positive effect that George Rise has had on the hundreds of kids under his tutorship during his many years as a coach, but I suspect you will find Champions in all walks of life who have applied the George Rise philosophy of “We Can Do It” to other aspects of their lives long after they left the playing field.

I know a lot of people will show up on April 26, to wish George a hearty farewell on his retirement from a career that has attracted attention across the State of Ohio and into neighboring states as well. George is the Champion of a lot of Champions whom he has worked to create and a lot of Champions yet to come.

Just to meet George and carry on a short conversation gives you the feeling you get when you are about to discard an old pair of shoes. They fit so well and feel so good you just don’t want to let go. That’s George Rise, in a nutshell.
